MEDIA CAN HELP CURB SOCIAL ILLS - MINISTER

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- Women, Family and Community Development
Minister Shahrizat Jalil believes that the rise in social problems of
late could be checked with the help of the media.

She hoped media cooperation by reporting on social ills including dumping of
babies could create awareness among the public not to commit the offence.

"The media have helped my ministry a lot in achieving its vision and mission
by reporting on its activities and efforts in addressing social ills," she said
at the breaking-of-fast organised by her ministry for members of the media,
here, Friday night.

Among those present were Bernama chairman Abdul Rahman Sulaiman and
its editor-in-chief Yong Soo Heong.

Shahrizat also congratulated the ministry's deputy secretary-general
(Policy) Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur on her appointment as its new
secretary-general from this Sept 19.

"I am happy and believe that the sharing of ideas between Heng (deputy
minister Senator Heng Seai Kie), Noorul Ainur and I will help chart a better
direction for the ministry," she said.
