PUTERA 1MALAYSIA CLUB AID TARGETS 5,000 FAMILIES IN PAKISTAN
From MOHD HISHAM ABDUL RAFAR
PESHAWAR, (PAKISTAN), Sept 4 (Bernama) -- Through its humanitarian mission,
the Putera 1Malaysia Club intends to bring relief to 5,000 families affected by
the floods in Pakistan.
Club president Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim believes it would be able to
achieve the target, following a decision to extend the club's humanitarian
mission for another 12 days until Sept 14.
The mission involves 68 members who are divided into two groups, one in
Karachi and the other in Peshawar.
"We will distribute more than 200 tonnes of aid, which we have brought, to
the
affected families," he told a media conference on arrival here Friday.
The aid, worth about RM3 million (US$962,680) (US$1=RM3.11), includes 150
tonnes of mineral water, food (50 tonnes) and medicine (20 tonnes).
Members of the Putera 1Malaysia Club humanitarian mission, aided by the
Pakistan Red Crescent Society, arrived in Karachi at 5.40pm local time (8.40pm
Malaysian time) and in Peshawar about 7.40pm local time (10.40pm Malaysian
time).
Malaysian High Commissioner Ahmad Anwar Adnan was on hand to greet the
Malaysian volunteers in Peshawar.
Abdul Azeez said the group in Karachi comprised 33 volunteers, including 15
doctors, while the team in Peshawar comprised 35 volunteers who included media
representatives from various organisations.
He said the distribution of the club's humanitarian aid would be carried out
at relief centres where the focus would be on providing medical aid to children.
"The other is, by going house-to-house. It is learnt the flood waters have
receded and the victims have been allowed to return home," he added.
He said the floods, described as the worst in 80 years, had swept away
about one million houses, leaving about 20 million people homeless.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Anwar said the Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy
Ministers (Bakti) also contributed to the flood victims in Pakistan, adding
that the consignment was handed over to the National Disaster Management
Authority in Pakistan.
According to the United Nations, the month-long floods claimed more than
1,700 lives.
