Foreign journalists interview Deputy Prime Minister

(KPL) Dr. Thongloune Sisoulith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR was interviewed by Channel News Asia aSingapore TV channel) and Bloomberg on 22 July.

The interview was held on the occasion of an ASEAN meeting: 41st ASEANForeign Ministers, ASEAN+dialogue partners and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).

These were held in Singapore from 20 to 24 July.

The Singapore television journalist asked the minister for his views on theASEAN chapter.

He said, "The ASEAN chapter is a very important symbol so that Laos is doing all it can to prepare the bill for ratification at the forthcoming Bangkok ASEAN Summit in December." Then Dr Thongloune commented on the current socio-economic development of Laos and said that the country is giving priority to the development of infrastructure. He said that though Laos is a landlocked country but it has vast untapped energy resources and other forms of natural resources andthese will enable her to carry out sustainable development projects.

He added that Laos is a crossroad country of Southeast Asia so it can serveas a transportation hub.

Speaking to the journalists the minister said that Laos has a lot of untapped hydroelectric power with a total capacity of 25,000 MW and with its development the energy can be exported to neighbouring countries suchThailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Dr. Thongloun touched on environment conservation in Laos and said that even though Laos is rapidly developing itself but he is giving priority to theprotection of its environment.

He asserted that Laos is enjoying political stability and he is co-operatingwith many countries to ensure peace, prosperity and stability in the region.

When Bloomberg interviewed Dr Thongloun he was asked to comment on the ongoing conflict over the Preah Vihear temple which straddles the Thai-Cambodian border. He said that by following the guidelines of the UNchapter the problem could be solved.

He also spoke on opening a stock market in Laos and added that presently afeasibility study is being carried out.
