SOME 4,000 FLOOD VICTIMS AT SWAT RELIEF CENTRE FEARED INFECTED WITH MALARIA

PESHAWAR (PAKISTAN), Sept 6 (Bernama) -- About 4,000 flood victims at the
Swat relief centre are feared to have been infected with Malaria following the
massive floods which hit Pakistan a month ago.

Head of the Malaysian medical mission to Pakistan, Dr Mohamad Kassim Abdul
Rahim, said malaria was among several illnesses, like diarrhoea, skin diseases
and sore eyes, affecting the flood victims there.

"We believe about 4,000 people at the Swat camp have been infected with
malaria and we have requested the medical team here to take samples of their
blood," he told reporters who accompanied the Putera 1Malaysia Club humanitarian
mission to Pakistan at a flood relief centre at Charsadda here Monday.

A medical officer at the Charsadda flood relief centre, Dr Muhammad Uzair,
from the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD), said a total of 22
malaria cases had been recorded after the floods in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Putera 1Malaysia Club president, Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim ,
handed over aid, comprising medicines, food, personal hygiene kit and flour, to
about 500 families at the relief centre.


Besides distributing the aid, medical treatment was also given to the
victims at the camp.

The Putera 1Malaysia Club humanitarian mission involved the participation of
68 volunteers, including 40 doctors and members of the media.
