PEDROSA CLAIMS SAN MARINO MOTOGP TITLE
SAN MARINO (Italy), Sept 6 (Bernama) -- Spanish rider Dani Pedrosa of Repsol
Honda Team won the San Marino MotoGP here on Sunday to record two successive
victories in the category for the first time.
The 24-year-old Pedrosa who started from pole, took the lead from the start
and never looked back to clinch his fourth victory ahead of overall leader and
compatriot Jorge Lorenzo of Fiat Yamaha Team.
"It was a great win and a good race overall. It was a great result after
Indy (Indianapolis Grand Prix)," said Pedrosa.
In Sunday's race, Pedrosa clocked 44 minutes 22.059 seconds, 1.900s ahead of
Lorenzo on 44:23.959s.
Valentino Rossi, who was racing on his home ground, settled for third
placing in 44:25.242s.
Meanwhile, Japanese Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa of Technomag-CIP Team died
from injuries suffered in a crash during the Grand Prix.
It was a pivotal moment in the race when the chasing trio of Tomizawa,
Scott Redding (Marc VDS Racing Team) and Alex de Angelis (JIR Moto2) were
involved in the crash after the 11th lap.
The 19-year-old who suffered cranial, thoracic and abdominal trauma, was
taken to Riccione Hospital.
The Moto2 Championship leader, Toni Elias of Gresini Racing Moto2 won his
sixth race of the season as he further extended his already substantial
advantage at the top of the standings to 83 points with 211 points.
In Sunday's race, he clocked 43:33.996s to clinch his sixth title, while
Julian Simon (Mafre Aspar Team) and Thomas Luthi (Interweetten Moriwaki Moto2)
completed the podium.
