OUTGOING IGP TAKES SWIPE AT THIRD PARTY INTERFERENCE

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- Outgoing Inspector-General of Police Musa
Hassan has expressed his disappointment over third party interference
in police business in maintaining public order and arrest of certain people.

"No need to interfere as we have a chain of command and control with
directions from the top starting from me to subordinate officers.

"So, we do not need any third party to give orders. When it happened, it was
wrong and it violated the law," he told a news conference on his retirement from
Sept 12 after 41 years of service Monday.

He said the third parties included the people from the Home Ministry,
outsiders and people with vested interests.

Musa, 59, said he was also disappointed with officers and members of the
force who did not fall in line, including those who were corrupt and abused
their power.

On his advice to the public, he said they should have a first class
mentality and should not take the law in their own hands in solving their
problems.

Urging the public to respect the police, he said, "If criminals died as a
result of police's action, the police are vilified. What about when policemen
are killed in line of duty?

"Do not treat us like criminals as we are part of the community and we look
after your safety."

On his retirement, Musa said it was an opportunity for him to take a long
rest as he hardly went on leave and to visit his colleagues at police stations
and state police contingents.

"I will also teach my grandchildren to be good citizens," he added.
