EXERCISE PATIENCE, TOLERANCE DURING BALIK KAMPUNG RUSH - TRANSPORT MINISTER

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 (Bernama) -- Transport Minister Kong Cho Ha has
reminded road users to be patient and tolerant when returning to their hometowns
for the Aidilfitri celebration.

He said traffic on expressways and main roads among towns were expected
to be heavy, between Wednesday evening and Thursday night, when most people
begin their journey home.

He said more than five million motorists were expected to be on the road
during the period, thus causing traffic jams in certain areas.

"Road users, especially drivers, should be more patient and tolerant, and
even take a longer travel time to reach destinations...but all should keep in
mind that it is 'better late than never'.

"There are families and loved ones waiting for our arrival," he said in a
statement here Wednesday.

Kong said roadblocks by road transport department (RTD) would also be in
place where possible, as long as it did not worsen traffic congestion.

Plainclothed RTD officials would be stationed to monitor traffic, especially
at the 202 killer stretches, he added.

"The authorities have identified 133 stretches throughout the country during
Ops Sikap 22, held in conjunction with the Hari Raya holidays.

"Johor and Perak have the highest number of roads identified as 'dangerous',
at 13 and 10, respectively," said the minister.

He noted that Malaysia's long-term plan in road safety was to achieve Zero
Fatality Vision.

Balik Kampung (English: "Return to village") is a Malay term for massive
exodus during festive seasons such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year
in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.
