HCM City pushes for railway safety

HCM City (VNA) - A safety campaign was launched in Ho Chi Minh City last weekend to raise awareness on the danger of encroaching on railway tracks and importance of ensuring a safety corridor for trains.

Organised by the Vietnam Railway Administration and the city People's Committee, the campaign aims to eliminate encroachments along the 112 km of tracks running through the city and neighbouring Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces.

In these three places, makeshift houses and stalls limit the visibility of train drivers while illegal vehicle and pedestrian crossings pose a threat not only to themselves but also to trains in many instances.

The stretches in HCM City 's Thu Duc District, Binh Duong's Di An District, and Dong Nai's Bien Hoa City are particularly prone to vehicle accidents, the railways' deputy chief inspector Mai Thanh Le Vu said.

He urged local authorities to take "tougher" measures against violators to ensure rail safety and reduce accidents.

There are 3,814 points around the country used as impromptu trackcrossings by vehicles and 4,000 structures encroaching the railway safety corridor, which pose the threat of deadly accidents.

Railways statistics say train-related accidents killed 2,113 people between 1996 and 2006. But few of them were caused by trains overturning or running off track.-Enditem
