.Russia marks Day of Lake Baikal.
IRKUTSK, the Siberia, September 12 (Itar-Tass) - Russia is marking Day
of Lake Baikal on Sunday. Baikal is the biggest freshwater lake on our
planet protected by UNESCO. The holiday was instituted in 1999 on the
initiative of public environmental organizations of the Irkutsk region,
the Republic of Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal territory.
Nina Abarinova, the region's deputy minister of environment and
natural resources, told Itar-Tass that the Baikal-Lensky Nature Reserve
had held traditional days of open doors while the Institute of Geography
of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences had organized a
roundtable meeting to discuss the development of ecological tourism near
Baikal.
Thematic classes have been held in schools and children's drawings
have been put on view. Environmentalists have cleaned the banks of Baikal
from waste and garbage.
The annual international "Man and Nature" festival of documentary,
popular and educational films will end in the Trans-Baikal territory on
Sunday.
In the meantime, an environmental march on the banks of the Angara
River will take place in Irkutsk. The most active environmentalists will
receive the awards of the "Seven Gems of the Trans-Baikal Territory"
festival.
Villages located on the banks of Lake Baikal will mark the Day
according to special programs.
The fifth international music festival 'Stars on Baikal', which is
under way in Irkutsk, has coincided with Day of Lake Baikal celebrations.
Its vast program of classical music will last until September 14, a source
at the festival's organizing committee told Itar-Tass.
The performers include world famous musicians such as conductor
Vladimir Spivakov, organist Garry Grodberg, violinists Vadim Repin and
Sergei Krylov, cellists Alexander Knyazev and Borislav Strulev, the piano
duet of Alexandra and Maxim Mogilevskiye as well as the Novosibirsk
Academic Symphony Orchestra, the Irkutsk gubernatorial symphony orchestra
and the orchestra of young musicians " The Baikal Constellation".
A charitable auction will be held on the festival's sidelines to
raise money to buy musical instruments and enable young talented musicians
to travel to prestigious music festivals and contests in Russia and abroad.
Pianist Denis Matsuyev, the honored artist of Russia and the
winner of international music contests, is one of the festival's
participants and organizers. Matsuyev was born in Irkutsk and made his
first steps in music in his hometown. At first, he went to a children's
art school and the local musical college from where he was sent to study
at the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatoire. Last year, the
35-year-old musician was awarded the title of honorary citizen of Irkutsk.
The maximum depth of Lake Baikal is 1, 642 meters. It is located
in the southern part of Eastern Siberia. The lake's coastline is 2,100
kilometers long. Its width varies from 25 to 80 kilometers. The lake is of
tectonic origin. It has stretched 636 km from the North to the Southwest
and has a shape of a gigantic half-moon. The area of its water surface is
31,722 square kilometers, which is approximately the size of countries
like Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark. Baikal has the sixth largest
