SPECIAL MCMC TEAM TO HANDLE WEB THREATS TO SECURITY - MINISTER

JELEBU, (Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia) Sept 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian
Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has set up a special team
together with the police to handle threats to national security and unity
channelled via the Internet, Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr
Rais Yatim said Monday night.

He said that since early this year, the MCMC had received 533 complaints on
abuse of the Internet, particularly the social network sites Facebook and
Twitter.

"Of the 533 complaints, 26 per cent were against those who attempted to destroy
racial unity in the country," he said at the Aidilfitri open house organised by
the ministry here.

Some 7,000 people attended the open house.

Dr Rais said the government did not blame Facebook or Twitter because such
websites were useful.

"Based on the 533 complaints, the government feels that the time has come to be
firm with those who ignore our advice," he said.
