UAE Search and Rescue Team concludes participation in EU's civil resilience exercise
Sept 14, 2010 (WAM)- The UAE Search and Rescue Team has s successfully concluded its participation in European Union (EU) exercise for search and rescue operations which started last Tuesday.
Europe's civil resilience exercise is a full scale activity co-financed through the contribution of the Civil Protection Financial Instrument of the European community.
The exercise was designed to look at how international teams would work together to overcome obvious barriers such as language and different working practices. It was designed to test responders and prepare them to deal with an event of a catastrophic nature in a safe but realistic learning environment.
But it was also designed to share techniques and learn whilst operating in a safe but very lifelike situation. The scenario behind the exercise was to look at how Europe would respond to a major incident.
Mohammed Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Director of the Emergency and Public Safety Department of Abu Dhabi Police, said that nine European countries took part in the exercise in addition to the UAE team which considered the only representative for the Middle East countries in the event.
He referred that the UAE participation evoked substantial attention from the European official and media circles which contributed in exchanging the joint expertise as well as recognising the tangible development the UAE team has gained in this field.
Al Nuaimi said the UAE mission, which engaged 52 commissioned '&' non-commissioned officer and personnel from the UAE search and rescue team ranked as ''medium team'' by the UN, had concentrated on coordination with the British Civil Defence and Germen, Swedish, Spanish, Italian, Danish Norwegian and Irish search and rescue teams to conduct a field exercise scenarios amidst rainy and cold weather conditions.
He added that the UAE team extracted six survivors from under the rubble.
According to him, the UAE's engagement in the civil protection event falls within the framework of a memorandum of understanding its has sealed with the British search-and-rescue team in March last.
The exercise focused on very low likelihood high impact events that, for any affected country, might involve overseas partners. It provided valuable training for all participants and observers and potentially provided lessons learned for the European Civil Protection community.
The main aims of the Exercise are to:- test activation and understanding of the EU Community Mechanism to provide mutual aid to the affected Member State (MS) from the EU; test a member state's ability to receive, command and work alongside emergency response teams from other EU member states; give EU and other observers an interactive role during the exercise, in order to contribute to the evaluation of the project and to achieve a broader dissemination of lessons learned through the evaluation process. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
