Fifth Session of the National Assembly wraps up

(KPL) - In session for 15 days from 7 to 26 July, the fifth session of the National Assembly's sixth legislature debated several key issues of the country and finally approved five laws in line with the nation's demand.

Mr Choummaly Sayasone, Secretary General of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee and Lao President, ministers, deputy ministers, representatives from the international organisations in Laos and invited guests, were present during the debates.

Mr. Thongsing Thammavong, President of the National Assembly, announced the closure of this session. In his closing speech he said that the National Assembly has adopted the socio-economic development and budget plan of Laos for the 2008-2009 fiscal year.

The meeting agreed to increase revenue from 14.85 percent to 15 percent of the Gross Domestic Products, to provide a conducive environment for investment, to encourage the production of goods, to ensure an adequate supply of food and to reduce poverty in the country. While there will be an increase in investment but the government will take steps to see that the situation will be sustainable and that the environment is still being preserved, said the President of the National Assembly.

The meeting approved three new laws: media, handicraft, and livestock and veterinary. There were two new amendments: the enforcement law on verdict and the family law.

Lawmakers proposed that the government immediately declare that theenforcement of the laws be carried out immediately and disseminated to the public.

While the government is considering the approval of the Hongsa hydropower project but it urges investors to be conscious of environment conservation, said Mr Thongsing.

"Though I am happy with the National Assembly's achievement over the past year, I am planning for the future and I am giving priority to improving the laws," he added.

Finally, Mr. Thongsing urged the government and private sectors to take advantage of the resolutions of the Fifth Meeting and at the same time to prepare for the coming meeting.
