.Medvedev to meet with Russia nat'l team to Beijing Olympics

MOSCOW, July 29 (Itar-Tass) - President Dmitry Medvedev of the Russian Federation (RF) is to receive Russia's Olympic team in the Kremlin here on Tuesday. The Head of State will wish successes to the RF athletes at the XXIX Olympic Games that open in Beijing on August 8, the Kremlin press service has announced.

On Monday, the Executive of Russia's Olympic Committee approved the composition of the country's team for the Games-2008. Four hundred and sixty-seven sportsmen are to participate in the Olympic competitions in China. Their average age is 26 years. They represent 59 constituent entities of the RF. The largest number of athletes will be sent by the city of Moscow (121) and Moscow Region (69). The overall membership of the Russian delegation is 843.

Andrei Kirilenko, captain of the RF basketball team, will be the standard-bearer of the Russian athletes. He was awarded the 2007 BestPlayer Prize in line with line with FIBA classification and won the title of the most valuable player of the 2007 European championship.

Shortly before the Russian sportsmen's departure for Beijing, there appeared reports about a possible increase in the size of State Prizes to gold medallists at the Olympics. In particular, Russian Vice-Premier Alexander Zhukov said those might be augmented from $50,000 to $100,000, specifying at the same time that although "no final decision has been taken so far, this is likely to be done".

Vitaly Mutko, Russian Minister for Sports, Tourism, and Youth Policy, also said this matter is on the agenda. "The Government of Russia will consider the possibility of increasing prize money for medals won by sportsmen. This will also apply to coaches," Mutko pointed out.
