POLICE DETAIN TWO FOREIGNERS SMUGGLING IN DRUGS FROM NEGHBOURING COUNTRY
JITRA (Kedah, Malaysia), Sept 15 (Bernama) -- The Kedah police detained two
foreigners from Africa who tried to smuggle in ganja valued at RM33,000
(US$10,645) at the Changlun bus terminal, near here Tuesday.
Kedah police chief Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said that in the 2.30pm incident,
a team from the state's narcotics crime investigation department led by
inspector Che Sham Rus detained the two men who were carrying a suitcase while
they were waiting for the bus heading for Kuala Lumpur.
"Upon inspection, the team found 12 slabs of dried ganja leaves inside the
suitcase, wrapped with aluminium folders, to avoid being detected by the
screening machine at the border entry point," he said at a media conference at
the Kubang Pasu police headquarters, here Wednesday.
He said the drugs, weighing 11,650 grammes, were believed to have been
smuggled in from Thailand by land for distribution in the Kuala Lumpur area.
Syed Ismail said both the suspects were from Guinea and Nigeria and aged 28
and 33, respectively. The Nigerian, a private college student in Kuala Lumpur,
entered this country using a student visa, while the second suspect was
unemployed.
Both suspects were remanded for seven days from Wednesday for investigation
under the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 Section 39B.
Syed Ismail said the student suspect had legally entered this country in
July.
