Japan to offer 6.62 bil. yen in aid to Africa, Asia amid food price hikes

TOKYO, July 29 Kyodo - Japan decided Tuesday to extend a total of 6.62 billion yen in grant aid to 10 countries in Africa and Asia such as Congo, Liberia and Bangladesh as a relief measure against soaring food prices, the Foreign Ministry said.

The move is part of the government's plan to offer about $100 million in emergency aid to developing nations over three months from late April, as well as additional aid worth $50 million by October.

Out of Tuesday's grant aid, 4.71 billion yen will be provided to seven African nations as bilateral aid, while the remaining 1.91 billion yen will be transferred via the World Food Program to three Asian countries -- East Timor, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Including the amount announced Tuesday, Japan will have extended a total of $203.12 million to developing countries this year.
