South Ossetia to mark national holiday - Republic Day.
MOSCOW, September 20 (Itar-Tass) - Sergei Mironov, the speaker of the
Russian Federation Council, is leaving for the South Ossetian capital of
Tskhinval on Monday. He will take part in the celebrations of the country'
s main holiday - Republic Day, a source at the Federation Council, the
upper chamber of Russian parliament, told Itar-Tass.
On his way to South Ossetia Mironov is expected to stop over in
Beslan. He will visit the City of Angels, a memorial cemetery where the
victims of the 2004 school siege are buried. Mironov will lay flowers at
the "Tree of Grief" memorial and at a monument to special troops who died
while liberating the hostages. After that, Mironov will leave for South
Ossetia.
In Tskhinval, he will watch a military parade of South Ossetian troops
and Russian border guards.
Mironov will also meet South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity and
Parliamentary Speaker Stanislav Kachiyev. After that, he's planning to
visit the 4th military base of the Russian Defence Ministry, talk to the
base commanders and meet the heads of the border department of the Russian
Federal Security Service for South Ossetia.
The Russian lawmaker will also lay flowers at a memorial to the
victims of Georgian aggression near school No.5 and will be present at an
ethnographic party called "The Heritage of the Forefathers".
South Ossetia marks Republic Day on September 20 because in 1990 the
Soviet of People's Deputies of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region
adopted a Declaration of state sovereignty of the South Ossetian Soviet
Democratic Republic.
. First Russian-Norwegian cultural forum to be held in Arkhangelsk.
ARKHANGELSK, September 20 (Itar-Tass) - The first Russian-Norwegian
cultural forum, "Russia-Norway: Searching for Common Cultural Space," will
be held in Arkhangelsk on Monday.
The forum will draw together representatives of the Ministries of
Culture and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Russia and Norway, the
government bodies of the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions, the Republics
of Karelia and Komi, the Nenets Autonomous District and the Norwegian
counties of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark as well as more than 500 artists
of song and dance groups.
"The delegates will discuss prospects of cultural cooperation between
Russia and Norway and between the northern regions of the two countries.
The discussions will dwell on bilateral museum, library and festival
projects and joint guest tours," the government press service went on to
say.
The cultural forum will wrap up the Days of Norway in Arkhangelsk that
opened on September 16. Norwegian politicians, business representatives,
and cultural figures have visited the festival. Norway has opened its
Honorary Consulate (extraordinary) in Arkhangelsk, so far the only one in
Russia. Agreements were signed in the spheres of education and economy;
art and photo exhibitions were organized and concerts of classical, jazz
and folklore music were held.
. USCG delegation arrives in Kamchatka.
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, September 20 (Itar-Tass) - A group of U.S.
Coast Guard officers will arrive in Kamchatka on Monday, a Russian coast
guard source told Itar-Tass.
The USCG will meet their Russian counterparts in
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to review the results of their activities in 2010
and work out plans for further interaction in 2011. Relevant documents are
going to be signed after the meeting.
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter "Jarvis" will call at the Avacha Bay as
part of the visit to hold joint exercises with the Russian border patrol
ship " Vorovsky".
The Russian border service and the U.S. Coast Guard established their
first contacts in 1990-1992. At present, Russian coast guards and their
U.S. partners patrol convention areas in the Bering Sea and northern
Pacific as well as demarcation lines between the territorial waters of
Russia and the United States.
The Russian and U.S. coast guard services constantly exchange
information.
