PM NAJIB TO LEAD M'SIAN DELEGATION TO UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak will lead the
Malaysian delegation to the 65th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New
York for six days from Thursday, the Foreign Ministry said.
In a statement, the ministry said Najib would be accompanied by wife Rosmah
Mansor and Foreign Minister Anifah Aman as well as officials of the Foreign
Ministry and Prime Minister's Department.
"Malaysia, which has been a UN member since September 1957 shortly after
gaining independence, regards the UN as a major platform to show commitment and
strengthen cooperation with the world community to maintain world peace and
security," the ministry said.
The 65th UNGA session, themed "Reaffirming the Central Role of the United
Nations in Global Governance", started on Sept 15.
Najib is scheduled to deliver his keynote address -- his maiden speech at
the world body -- during the general debate on Sept 27.
He will also attend the second Asean-United States heads of government
meeting on Friday in New York which will be co-chaired by Vietnam's President
who is also the chair of Asean, Nguyen Minh Triet, and US President Barack
Obama.
The ministry said the meeting was a platform for Asean leaders and Obama to
discuss the future direction of Asean-US relations and exchange views on
regional and international issues.
Najib and Anifah will also hold bilateral meetings with their counterparts
during the visit.
The prime minister would also host an Aidilfitri open house for Malaysian
students and community in New York on Saturday, the statement added.
