YOUNG MALAYSIANS SHYING AWAY FROM THE STOCK MARKET
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- Many young Malaysians are shying away from
the stock market due to the misconception of it being highly risky, expensive
and difficult to learn.
"Our investors and intermediaries base, points to a significant aging population
in the retail market. They are pre-dominantly in the 40's category," Bursa
Malaysia chief executive officer, Yusli Mohamed Yusoff said.
Hence, he added, there is a need to narrow the gap, not only from the point of
age, but also the educational and understanding perspective to create a
sustainable investors base.
He was speaking at the launch of "eTrade On The Go," here Wednesday.
"eTrade On The Go", mainly targeted at youths, is a programme where JF Apex
Securities Bhd clients who trade online, will each be rewarded with a free
laptop and broadband service for a period of 24 months.
It is a one year tie-up programme between JF Apex, Acer Sales and
Services Sdn Bhd, DiGi and Tejari Technology Bhd.
The programme covers a series of nationwide roadshows organised to retain,
re-activate existing investors, and recapture new investors via the JF Apex
online trading portal.
Yusli said Malaysians generally should know that regardless of market
conditions, there are always opportunities to be explored when it comes to
investing in the capital market.
"(Hence) roadshows such as "eTrade On The Go" is an excellent platform to engage
with this very important segment of potential retail investors, particularly in
mitigating their misconceptions about the capital market," he said.
