MALAYSIA CONDEMNS ANY FORM OF ABUSE OF WORKERS

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian government strongly condemns any
form of abuse of workers regardless of their nationality or sector of
occupation, Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said Wednesday.

He said the government and Malaysians were saddened and shocked by the latest
incident of physical and sexual abuse of Indonesian domestic maid Win Faidah
which was reported on Sept 17.

"It is regrettable that such an incident happened although employers of domestic
maids have often been advised accordingly," he said in a statement.

Anifah said the government, through the foreign ministry, would provide every
assistance to the Indonesian government in the matter.

He also said that the Malaysian government gave the assurance that the police
and relevant agencies would conduct investigations immediately and impose the
appropriate penalty on the offenders.

Win Faidah, 26, was allegedly physically and sexually abused for more than four
months by her employers in Penang.

A married couple was detained by police on Sept 19 to facilitate
investigations into the case.

They are also to be investigated for human trafficking.
