He asked US business leaders and institutions to
sensitise Congress in favour of the benefits of outsourcing.
On the slow progress of WTO negotiations for a global
trade opening deal, Sharma said India's concerns have been
conveyed to the US and other interlocutors.
Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar, who is accompanying the
minister, recently said in New Delhi that with the US not
ready for the Doha deal owing to its domestic compulsions, the
WTO agreement cannot be reached this year.
Sharma said with deepening and strengthening of strategic
relationships between the countries, there was no
justification for subjecting Indian companies to US export
controls on sensitive items.
"The issue of export controls, particularly the need to
remove Indian entities, was raised earlier. It did figure,
not in the trade policy form, but in the closed bilateral
(talks)," Sharma said when asked about the continuation of
Indian companies in the entities list.
Under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR),
certain foreign entities are subjected to specific licence
requirements for the export and re-export of specified items
that are strategic in nature.
The two countries have strategically come close after
signing of the India-US nuclear deal. PTI LKJ
