KASHMIR-2NDLD SITUATION
Curfew further relaxed in the Valley
Srinagar, Sep 22 (PTI) Srinagar city and some other
towns of Kashmir Valley Wednesday came to life as authorities
relaxed curfew for the second time in as many days even as the
toll in the ongoing agitation rose to 104 after a youth
succumbed to injuries in a hospital in north India.
Curfew was relaxed for an indefinite period in South,
East and West zones of Srinagar city from 3 PM followed by
easing of restrictions in rest of the areas falling under
North and Hazratbal Zones from 5 PM onwards, a Jammu and
Kashmir state police spokesman said.
He said senior police and civil officers were
monitoring the situation and reimposition of curfew would
depend on the obtaining law and order scenario.
Immediately after the authorities announced relaxation
in curfew, shops and business establishments opened across
Srinagar and people were seen buying essential commodities.
Curfew was imposed in Srinagar on September 12 and was
extended to the entire Kashmir Valley the next day following
widespread violence.
The prohibitory order was relaxed in a phased manner
in Srinagar and other major towns Tuesday but was reimposed
since the night.
Curfew was also relaxed in a phased manner in
Ganderbal in North East, Pulwama, Anantnag, Shopian and Kulgam
in South and Bandipora in North Kashmir. However, there was
no relaxation in curfew in Budgam in Central Kashmir and
Kupwara, Baramulla and Sopore towns in North Kashmir.
The spokesman said the relaxation in Ganderbal
district town alongwith Kangan was first announced for two
hours from noon but was later extended to 4 PM.
Similarly, the curfew was relaxed in Pulwama district
town and Awantipora from 1 PM to 4 PM, Shopian district town
from 3 PM to 6 PM, Kulgam from 4 PM onwards, Anantnag district
town from 5 PM to 8 PM, Bijbehara from 5 PM to 6 PM, Bandipora
district town from 5 PM to 6 PM and Sumbal from 5.30 PM to 6
PM, the spokesman said.
There was no major incident reported from any part of
the Valley where curfew was relaxed, he said.
Although the relaxation period passed off peacefully
on Tuesday, the authorities decided to continue with the
restrictions apparently in view of the weekly agitation
calendar issued by hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed
Ali Shah Geelani.
Geelani, who is spearheading the ongoing agitation in
the Valley, had exempted the day from strike and protests.
The hardline leader Wednesday modified his protest
calender by calling off the strike for the next two days.
"There will be no strike on Thursday and Friday," a
Hurriyat Spokesman said without elaborating on the reasons for
modifying the protest schedule. MORE PTI MIJ
