TERRORISTS WANT INDONESIA TO BE LIKE IRAQ, PAKISTAN, AFGANISTAN

JAKARTA, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Indonesia's police chief Jendral Bambang Hendarso Danuri said terrorist groups in the country wanted Indonesia to be like Iraq, Pakistan and Afganistan.

He said they were trying to conduct militant activities in the country's cities
and interiors, besides planning to bring mujahideen fighters from these three
countries.

"Their aim is to overthrow the government and install an Islamic caliphate," he
told a news conference here Friday.

He said several documents found by police and confessions from suspects caught
showed they were resorting to robbing banks to finance their operations, which
included buying arms and boosting cadre reqruitment.

"They deem the robberies be halal because in their view, the assets to belong to
infidels," he said.

Bambang said the militants involved received training in Pakistan, Mindanao
(Philippines), Afganistan, Aceh, Gunung Lawu (Central Java ), Deli Serdang
(North Sumatera) and Sumedang (West Jave) and were equipped with bomb-making
skills.

"They are prepared to be martyrs," he said.

According to him, from 2000 to this year, terrorist attacks were launched in 11
cities, resulting in 268 deaths including 19 policemen while more than 200
people were injured.

On their side, he said, 10 lost their lives because of suicide bombing, 44 were
shot dead while 563 others were facing charges.
