JOHNS HOPKINS MEDICAL SCHOOL IN MALAYSIA?

From Mokhtar Hussain

NEW YORK, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is poised to become a high-skill medical training hub after the government agreed in principle to the proposal to set up Johns Hopkins Medical School in the country, Prime Minister Najib Razak said.

He said the institution, which would have 600 beds and a research centre, would
probably be set up in Serdang in the state of Selangor, under a private
financing initiative.

The joint venture agreement between a Malaysian company and Johns Hopkins
Medical International was expected to be signed in Kuala Lumpur in November, he
told Malaysian journalists covering his six-day visit here to attend the
Asean-United States Summit and the 65th session of the United Nations General
Assembly.

Najib earlier met Dr Mohan Chellappa, president of Global Ventures, John Hopkins
Medical International here.

The prime minister said John Hopkins Medical International was a
world-renowned medical school and had adopted a different curriculum compared to
other schools.

"They are using the 'Genes to Society' curriculum, which is a more
personalised medical approach," he said, adding that the school provided a four-year
programme and planned to take 100 students each year.

"Johns Hopkins has got a very good name. The idea is to create Malaysia as a
hub," he added.

There are at least three government hospitals in the vicinity of Serdang which
can be used as a teaching hospital namely the Serdang Hospital, Putrajaya
Hospital and Kajang Hospital.

Recent newsreport quoted sources as saying that the investment involved could be
around RM1.8 billion (US$582.147 million). (US$1=RM3.09)

Johns Hopkins University has campuses in China, Singapore, Italy and the US.
