Nam Ngum dam releases water

(KPL) Because of heavy rainfall the authorities released water from Nam Ngum dam and it is likely to release more water in the coming months.

The meteorological centre forecasted heavy rains for the coming three months so that the Nam Ngum reservoir will have more water than it can hold. On the 24 July the Electricite du Laos released the water of the Nam Ngum dam by as much as 70 cm to the Nam Ngum river and this raised the water level of theNam Ngum river.

The water level of Nam Ngum dam had been raised to 211.28 metres high and it is holding water to its maximum and if water is not released in the next few days it would have an adverse effect on the dam's structure, said Mr PhoumyNitibandith, the General Director of Nam Ngum dam.

We found that the water level at the downstream end of the dam is 168 metres and compared to the past months it has decreased by 11 metres, said the General Director. Another reason for the release of the water is to ensure that the electrical infrastructure of the dam remains functional and also to protect its structure, he added."We are certain that the release of water will not affect the agricultural production of the local people who are located in the downstream areas," said Mr Phoumy. The main objective is to get rid of excess water that will come from the heavy rainfall in the coming months, he said. The release of water exercise will be conducted till the end of this month and if the heavy rainfall continue we may extend it tillAugust, he told the KPL reporter.
