No serious risk of bird flu at Olympics in Beijing- experts

MOSCOW, July 30 (Itar-Tass) - There are no reasons to believe that bird flu is a serious danger for Russian fans who go to Beijing, the coordinator of the World Health Organization on avian and pandemic flu, Doctor of Medicine Sergei Yeremin said.

He told a news conference on Tuesday that "beginning from 2003, a total 30 human cases of bird flue have been registered and officially confirmed in China, and 20 of them died." "Bird flu is not a main problem about which you shul talk during thepreparation of those who are to visit Beijing," Yeremin said.

He said "there are fairly simple measures for protecting yourself from the risk of contracting this infection. As for other possible measures, you should be wary of infections that are transmitted through food and the water." Yeremin said a special instruction had been developed for Russian and foreign rooters who are going to attend the Olympic Games in Beijing, He said "there are no immediate risks for health of rooters, andmandatory vaccinations should not be made".

The Professor of the Chair of Infectious Diseases at Moscow's Sechenov Medical University, Yelena Volchkova, said initial symptoms of bird fludiffer little from usual flu.

"The disease begins with a rise of body temperature to 39-40 degrees, the patients also develop the diarrhea syndrome, which is notcharacteristic for usual flu," she said.

"Since it is impossible to make a diagnosis within first hours whether it is bird flu or ordinary flu that circulates in a given territory, we recommend the intake of drugs that would be highly effective against a given virus, in particular Taminir, which is called in our country Tamiflu, that effectively acts on a large group of influenza virusesincluding on H5N1 (virus causing bird flu)," Volchkova said.

She went on to say that it was not recommendable in many countries to visit places of poultry slaughter, markets and exotic places, as the everything is dangerous in the infected poultry - meat, feathers, eggs, blood and excretions.

"This is a main measure for breaking contact with an infectionsource,". Volchkova said.

She said the usual incubation period of the disease is 2-4 days, but it can reach 8 days if a person leaves a territory where he contractedinfection, and the disease can occur in another region.
