Lawyers from Crete to offer Karadzic gratuitous defense at Hague
ATHENS, July 30 (Itar-Tass) - A group of lawyers from the island of Crete plans visiting the former political leader of Bosnian Serbs, DrRadovan Karadzic, in jail and to offer him defense free of charge at the international tribunal for war crimes in the Hague, the Athens news agency ANA said.
Dimitris Pontikakis, the chairman of the Lawyers Association of Chania said Tuesday a group lawyers from that Cretan city has set itself an objective to demand that international organizations ensure a fair trialfor Radovan Karadzic.
The group will examine the conditions in which Dr Karadzic is kept in jail and will tell him that the Lawyers Association has taken a decision to provide a group of five legal experts for his defense in the courtroom,Pontikakis said.
He voiced the hope that the Hague tribunal will act in an unbiased manner, will abide by the objective criteria of international law, andwill refrain from politically tendentious rulings.
Pontikakis admitted that Cretan lawyers do not know the charges issued against Karadzic and have not seen the materials of the case so far, andhence they cannot assess the kind of crimes he is accused of.
A decision to defend him free of charge was taken as part of general concern for human rights, and if Karadzic agrees to it, he will bedefended at the Hague tribunal gratuitously.
