MALAYSIAN PM`S WIFE SAYS RACIAL HARMONY CAN LEAD TO GREATER DEVT & PROSPERITY

NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- Rosmah Mansor, wife of the
Malaysian prime minister, believes that racial harmony and peace can lead to
greater development and prosperity in Malaysia.
"My personal view is that racial harmony and peace are the best way to
achieve even greater development and prosperity in Malaysia," she said in a
one-on-one interview on Monday with Bernama during a luncheon hosted in her
honour at the Malaysian permanent mission to the United Nations, here.
The luncheon was organised by Perwakilan New York, an association of the
spouses of Malaysian diplomats accredited to the United Nations and other
officials.
Rosmah highlighted the importance of the 1Malaysia programme, which she said
"is indeed, the best vehicle for achieving development and progress for all
Malaysians".
"That is also what my husband has been saying. Racial harmony and peace are
important for the future of Malaysia and our children and grandchildren," she
added.
"As a mother and wife, I would like to see our future generations co-exist
peacefully and harmoniously. We have accepted the food of other races and we
should also accept other races who are part of us ... we should co-exist with
people of other races and religions. We should not deprive them of good
education and basic facilities such as water and other amenities," she
explained.
The elaborate luncheon, prepared by the Perwakilan ladies, presented
cuisines and desserts typical of a number of states of Malaysia.
Rosmah, who was accompanied by her daughter, Noryana Najwa, and the wife of
the Malaysian foreign minister, Siti Rubiah Abdul Samad, has been
passionate about helping children.
"We need to help children. They are our future," she stressed, pointing out
that Malaysia was also setting up schools for gifted children.
Although this visit to New York has been the longest compared to her much
shorter visits in the past, Rosmah did not find time to do some sightseeing in
the Big Apple.
"I have not had time to go out (for sightseeing) in New York,” she added.
On her meeting Michelle Obama, wife of President Barack Obama, Rosmah said:
"Although my meeting with Mrs Obama was brief, it was a very pleasant
experience. I think she is a warm, friendly and engaging person."
Rosmah also spoke of her pet project, the upcoming First Ladies’ Summit in
Kuala Lumpur from Oct 11 to 13, where 23 First Ladies had already confirmed
their attendance.
The summit will highlight awareness on the importance of investing in the
holistic education and welfare of children, with the aim of developing
exceptional leaders from all sections of society.
