MIDA SEEKS TO ATTRACT MORE FDIs FROM THE UNITED STATES

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Investment Development
Authority (MIDA) hopes to attract more foreign direct investments (FDIs) from
the United States following the visit of Mary Buffett, author of "The
Buffettology Workbook", to Malaysia.

MIDA director-general Jalilah Baba hoped that Buffett could convey
about Malaysia's strength and vast opportunities to potential investors when she
returned to the US.

"My intention is to attract the interest of Americans to come over here. If
people like Warren Buffett and Mary Buffett see Malaysia as a good location for
investments, it will attract those who never considered Malaysia as an
investment destination," Jalilah told reporters after the MIDA Networking
Session with Mary Buffett here Thursday.

Buffett was also one of speakers at the Alternative Investments in Asia
forum entitled "Dawn of the New Decade", organised by International Herald
Tribune and The London Speaker Bureau, and held here on Sept 27 and 28.

As part of its effort to attract investments from the US, Jalilah said MIDA
planned to organise a Malaysia-US Bridging Programme in collaboration with Mary
Buffett to provide information to Americans about investment opportunities
available here.

"The idea is to give knowledge so that Americans will know about the
available opportunities. Culturally, we should know each other. It is a
people-to-people link," she said.

"When you know the people and the country well, then the investors will be
interested to invest here," Jalilah said.

"The Malaysia-US Bridging Programme is still an idea. We have not done
anything yet and we have not even thought of how to go about doing it," she
said.

Earlier in her keynote address, Jalilah said as at Dec 31, 2009, a total of
663 industrial projects were implemented with investment amounting to US$13.5
billion.

The US is currently the third largest foreign investor in Malaysia in the
manufacturing sector, she said.

From January to July 2010, the US continued to be a major source of foreign
investments with investments amounting to RM917.8 billion in 14 approved
projects.

The major investments in the manufacturing sector are electrical and
electronics, petroleum products, chemical and chemical products, food
manufacturing, transport equipment and machinery manufacturing.
