SITI DREAMS OF WINNING THIRD CONSECUTIVE GOLD IN COMMONWEALTH GAMES
By P.Vijian
NEW DELHI, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- Arriving in India after a minor surgery, Malaysian ace lawn bowler Siti Zalina Ahmad said she was ready for a record third consecutive gold win at the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games.
"This is a great opportunity for me to complete a hat-trick of gold medals
in the Commonwealth Games," said Siti.
Siti, who was thrilled to have been given the honour to carry the Malaysian
flag at the opening of the games this Sunday, won her maiden gold at the 2002
Manchester Commonwealth Games in England and four years later added the second
in Melbourne, Australia.
"Competition here is going to be extremely tough, with some of the best lawn
bowl players from Scotland, England, South Africa and also India in the
competition," she said in Delhi Friday.
Siti, currently ranked fourth in the world women's singles, won a gold medal
at the Commonwealth test event held in Delhi last April.
The 31-year-old bowler was also confident that the Malaysian team would
shine at the Delhi games -- where a six-member team was participating.
"We have three members in the women's team and three in the men's squad.
That basically means we are in the run for six gold medals and we will try to
win as many as possible," she added.
Most of the Malaysian athletes had arrived in Delhi and had started warming
up for the major sporting event, to be held here from Oct 3 to 14.
About 7,000 athletes would be participating in the 19th edition of the games
in Delhi.
Malaysian athletes would feature in 14 of the 17 sports hosted.
