SECOND MEETING OF REGIONAL 3R FORUM KICKS OFF MONDAY

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- The second meeting of the Regional 3R Forum in Asia organised by the Housing and Local Government Ministry which aims for a greener economy in the region, kicks off here on Monday.

The event, which is also co-organised by the Environment Ministry of Japan
and United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) with support from the
German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) will discuss ways to promote the 3Rs
(reduce, reuse, recycle) towards achieving resource efficiency and a sound
material recycling society.

Housing and Local Government Minister Chor Chee Heung said Malaysia
had always emphasised on the 3Rs because the government believed that the
country could no longer depend on landfills to solve waste problems.

"The Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 which will be
enforced next year, will give special attention to separation at source of 3R
activities, this will boost 3R activities in Malaysia," he said in a statement
Friday.

The three-day forum with the theme "3Rs for Green Economy and Sound
Material-Cycle Society" provides a platform for disseminating best practices,
tools and technologies concerning various aspects of the 3Rs to Asian countries.
