Ex-Satyam chairman Raju likely to be grilled in a day or two
E
Hyderabad, Oct 2 (PTI) Former Satyam Computers chairman B
Ramalinga Raju, the prime accused in the Rs 14,000-crore scam,
was on Saturday discharged from a hospital after undergoing
treatment for the past 10 months, paving way for his
interrogation by the CBI which is likely in a day or two.
According to sources in the Central Bureau of
Investigation (CBI), Raju who paid his maiden appearance
before the investigating officer (IO) on Saturday will be
issued a notice late in the evening to appear before them soon
for questioning.
Raju appeared before the IO as part of the conditions
laid down by the High Court of the southern Indian state of
Andhra Pradesh while granting bail in August, according to
Raju's counsel Bharat Kumar.
"He appeared before the IO today. CBI could not question
him on anything because as notice has to be issued to him
prior to the questioning," CBI DIG Lakshimi Narayana said.
Sources told PTI that the questioning will revolve around
the alleged funds diversion to some of the foreign countries
from which CBI is awaiting replies.
The restated accounts presented by Mahindra Satyam
indicated possible diversion of funds aggregating USD 41
million so far from the proceeds of the ads which were listed
on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in May 2001.
The forensic audit revealed that diversion of funds
possibly include payments to banks worth USD 22 million,
payments of USD 9 million to other entities as well as cash
outflows to unidentified beneficiaries to the tune of USD 10
million.
A Gastroenterologist of Nizam's Institute of Medical
Sciences, where Raju had been admitted, said Raju had
requested the hospital authorities to discharge him on Friday.
"He made a request yesterday (Friday). He still has to be
administered 11 injections as part of the treatment. However,
the risk is much less now. His liver is functioning normally,"
Kumar said.
Raju has cleared the hospital bill of approximately Rs 8
lakh yesterday, he said.
"We gave him some instructions on cleanliness and
medication to follow. He did not indicate if he would be
getting admitted in any other hospital," Kumar said when asked
about the risk factor, which was cited as reason for Raju not
attending the court proceedings earlier.
Recently, CBI had filed a petition in India's Supreme
Court seeking cancellation of bail to Raju and nine others.
The Apex court subsequently issued notice to Raju to file a
reply before October 19. PTI GDK
