M'SIAN MINISTER ARRIVES IN GUADALAJARA FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE

GUADALAJARA (Mexico), Oct 5 (Bernama) -- Information ommunications and Culture
Minister Dr Rais Yatim arrived here Monday to attend an International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) conference.

The Conference was to decide the future role of the organization and in the
process set the course for the development of the global information and
telecommunications industry.

The minister, who arrived here this morning accompanied by his wife Masnah Rais,
was met on arrival by Khalid Ramli, the chairman
of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at the Mexican resort
city.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon is set to open the conference in a few hours
time which will see ministers and delegates plus private sector representatives
deliberate on ways to maintain and extend international cooperation among all
member states for the improvement and rational use of telecommunications of all
kinds.

The conference ends on Oct 22.

In Guadalajara, Malaysia will seek re-election as the ITU's representative for
the Asia Australia region, which it has held for the past four terms with each
term spanning four years.

Malaysia's representative, Dr Ali Ebadi senior vice president for Space Systems
Development at Measat will also seek re-election as the regional representative
for the second time in the Radio Regulations Board (RRB).

The plenipotentiary conference is ITU's top policy-making body that sets the
general policies of the organization for the next four years, whereby its agenda
is a standing document sufficiently broad to enable discussions and debate on
many issues.
