MALAYSIA RE-ELECTED ON THE COUNCIL OF ICAO

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has been re-elected into the
Council of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for the term
2010-2013, at the 37th session of the assembly during the election held
yesterday in Montreal, Canada.

Transport Minister Kong Cho Ha who headed the country’s delegation to the
assembly, said: "Malaysia was deeply honoured for retaining the seat as the
council was instrumental in deciding matters related to civil aviation standards
and regulations.

"I believe that we have shown a reasonably good record in regards to the
ICAO standards as we have been actively involved in their activities and shown
our commitment to the council.

"Since its election in 2007, Malaysia has made significant contributions to
ICAO's work," said Kong in a statement emailed to Bernama here.

Malaysia received 137 votes out of 161 eligible-voting Member States
compared with only 92 votes when it was elected for the first time in 2007.

There are 190 Member States of ICAO. Malaysia became a Member State in 1958.

The elections were the highlight of the 37th ICAO Assembly taking place from
Sept 28 to Oct 8, 2010.

There are three categories where a member country is elected to become a
part of the council and Malaysia falls under the third category, which comprises
a state with a destination enabling passengers to travel across the globe.

The ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that codifies the
principles and techniques of international air navigation and fosters the
planning and development of international air transport to ensure the safety,
security and sustainability of civil aviation.

The ICAO Council is the governing body that adopts Standards and Recommended
Practices (SARPs) and responsible to carry out policy decisions and strategic
directions of the United Nation’s organisation formulated by the Assembly.

Kong said Malaysia’s re-election reaffirms the confidence of Member States
of our contributions to international civil aviation.

He said that as a Council Member for the past three years, Malaysia had been
actively contributing in setting up policies and SARPs to be adopted by all ICAO
Member States.

Kong also said that last Friday, Malaysia received an overwhelming response
from the member countries of ICAO, when more than 800 delegates attended the
Dinner Reception hosted by the Delegation of Malaysia at Hilton Bonaventure
Hotel in Montreal.
