CHANGE THE MIND SET TO SOLVE CHILD ABUSE CASES-UNICEF

PETALING JAYA (Malaysia), Oct 7 (Bernama) -- The public must change their
mindset and be evoked with the feel that "we could do something" when dealing
with child abuse cases said United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef)
Representative to Malaysia, Hans Olsen.

Citing Malaysia's Social Welfare Department's statistics which showed an
average of seven children abused daily in 2008, he said the public must take a
stand for all children and create an environment where it is unacceptable to
abuse them.

"We need to acknowledge that children are being abused in all cultural
groups and economic strata.

"We need to understand what abuse is, and why it happens, how we can be
supportive before it goes too far and how we can help and support each other, so
it never happens," he said when launching the "Get on Board" campaign here
Wednesday.

He said child abuse could be prevented if people were empowered with the
right knowledge and information about what an individual or group could do
with the right community support.

The public can get all information and learn about child abuse through the
www.uniteagainstabuse.my website.

The "Get on Board", a digital driven campaign, is a two-month initiative by
Unicef, aimed to unite 100,000 Malaysians in time for the finale on Human Rights
Day in December.
