IATA WELCOMES GLOBAL AGREEMENT BY ICAO MEMBERS TO STABILISE CARBON EMISSIONS

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- The International Air Transport Association
(IATA) has welcomed the move by 190 countries to sign up for a global agreement
to stabilise carbon emissions.

The Geneva-based IATA said this was formalised during the 37th International
Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Assembly held in Montreal, Canada, Friday.

"Governments have taken an historic decision. For the first time, we have
globally agreed aspirational goals to stabilise emissions," said IATA's chief
executive officer and director-general Giovanni Bisignani in a statement today.

According to him, no other industry sector has a similar globally agreed
framework for managing its response to climate change in a manner that takes
into consideration the needs of both developed and developing countries.

"The agreement recognises the need for governments and industry to work
together and this is a good first step that prepares the way for future
achievements," he said.
