BIGGEST WWII BOMB DEMOLISHED BY POLICE
MIRI (Malaysia), Oct 11 (Bernama) -- A team from the police bomb disposal
unit Sunday successfully destroyed a 450kg bomb which had been dropped by the
British army during the Second World War near a government secondary school in
Lutong, 12km from here.
The bomb, the biggest ever found in Sarawak (an East Malaysia state), had to
be detonated twice starting from 2.45pm in order to avoid it from causing
distruction to the surrounding areas of the explosion spot.
The Sarawak Police staff officer of the logistics and arms unit,
ASP Wan Zulkifli Wan Ali, who led the team, said the bomb also had to be buried
about 3.66 metres deep before being detonated.
The police here were informed on the bomb find near the Sekolah Menengah
Kerajaan Lutong, at 2pm lon Friday and in view of its size, had to refer
it to the Sarawak police headquarters in Kuching.
It was stumbled upon by a construction worker while he was drilling a hole
by using a driller machine.
