China happy over US move to lift ban on sale of C-130 aircraft K J M Varma

Beijing, Oct 12 (PTI) China Tuesday welcomed the US move
to lift ban on the sale of C-130 aircraft and asked America to
further relax restrictions on high-tech exports to the
country, saying this would be in the interests of both sides.
"We hope the US side to take additional measures to
ease restrictions on the export of high-tech products to
China. This would be in the interests of both sides," Chinese
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said here.
Easing of restrictions on the export of high-technology
products to China would be in the interests of both
sides, he said, adding that China has taken note of a decision
by the US to allow the export of C-130 cargo planes to it.
In a letter to the US Congress on Friday, President
Barack Obama said it is "in the national interest of the
United States" to allow the export of the C-130 to help in oil
spill cleanup operations at sea.
The arms embargo was imposed after the 1989 crackdown
on students protests in Tiananmen square.
Should the proposal pass in both Houses of Congress,
this will be the first time that the US will export arms to
China after 1989.
The C-130 cargo aircraft - also known as the Lockheed
C-130 Hercules - is a four-engine turboprop military transport
aircraft designed and built in the 1950s.
Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and
landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop,
medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft.
The aircraft have been widely used by NATO and
coalition troops on the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq.
The C-130 has so far been exported to more than 50
countries worldwide. PTI KJV
