Mamata invited to China
MAMATA
Kolkata, Oct 12 (PTI) After Cambridge, India' Railway
Minister Mamata Banerjee has been invited by the Chinese
government to address the World Congress on high speed rail
to be held in Beijing from December 7.
"The invitation has reached the Rail Bhavan in Delhi
inviting Banerjee to address the international conference on
high speed rail," Special Secretary to the minister Ratan
Mukherjee told PTI here Tuesday.
Asked whether she would attend, Mukherjee said "the
invitation has just landed."
Commenting on the invitation to Mamata, CPI(M) leader Md
Selim said it was a government-to-government contact. "We are
not trying to find any political meaning."
Selim, a CPI(M) central committee member, told PTI that
"she should learn something about the Chinese railway system.
The interaction in Beijing will help India expedite its
railway network and have a sobering effect on the Railway
Minister on how to speed up services and frequency which are
lacking."
The Ministry of Railways in China will co-host the
Congress with the International Union of Railways.
The rail Congress has been organized by the UIC since
1992 as an international event for showcasing and exchanging
achievements made in high-speed rail sector.
Last week, however, Banerjee cancelled a visit to
Cambridge University for a lecture due to "political violence"
in the state. PTI PKC
