ATTAINING DEVELOPED NATION TARGET DEPENDS ON QUALITY EDUCATION -MALAYSIAN DPM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's attainment of its developed
nation target by 2020 depends greatly on the ability of academics to make
available and deliver quality education, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin
Yassin said Saturday.

Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said the holistic shaping of an
individual was only possible through the innovative and creative development of
students during the teaching-learning process.

"In this way, we can bring forth human capital which is knowledgeable,
creative, innovative and skillful as well as capable of spurring a
knowledge-based economy and creating new wealth for our country.

"This is in line with the desire of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak
to implement the New Economic Model (NEM) and make Malaysia a high-income
nation," he said when addressing the 1Malaysia gathering of teachers at the
Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, here.

The gathering, carrying the theme "Teachers, the Catalyst for 1Malaysia",
was attended by about 14,000 teachers from all over the country.

Muhyiddin said teachers had a role to play in transforming the country
into a developed, high-income nation.

"High quality human capital in terms of knowledge and skills is necessary in
a competitive globalised world. In this context, the government has taken
proactive measures through strengthening of the education system driven by the
implementation of the National Key Results Areas (NKRAs) from the level of early
education," he said.

Muhyiddin said the ministry always strived to make available equitable
teaching-learning opportunities for all the people, including the Orang Asli in
the peninsula and the ethnic groups in Sabah and Sarawak.

He also said that all policies were aimed at creating a balanced, holistic,
healthy, patriotic and outstanding human capital.

"As such, I urge all academics, as the agents of implementation and change,
to play their respective roles at all levels to help the government realise its
goal of building a nation along the 1Malaysia spirit," he said.
