AGENCY FOILS NEW TACTIC OF SMUGGLING CONTRABAND CIGARETTES
PORT KLANG (Malaysia), Oct 16 (Bernama) -- In a departure from the norm,
syndicates are now resorting to a new tactic of smuggling contraband cigarettes
via passenger ferries, instead of fibreglass speedboats.
This was uncovered by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency here when it
seized 226 cartons of branded cigarettes from a passenger ferry, off the West
Port last night.
The contraband, worth about RM20,014 (US$1=RM3.08), was found in the baggage
section of the Pacific Jetstar 1 ferry, about 0.7 nautical miles off Port Klang.
It was concealed in several foodstuff and soap boxes when the agency's
enforcement officers made the seizure about 4.20pm, said the agency's southern
region enforcement chief, First Admiral Zulkifli Abu Bakar.
He said the ferry was on its way from Tanjung Balai Asahan, Indonesia to the
jetty in Pulau Ketam when it was checked.
"This was the first time such tactic was used to smuggle contraband
cigarettes as in previous cases, fibreglass boats were used," he said.
Zulkifli said the agency would continue to monitor all seaside areas in
the southern region as such actvities were expected to increase in view of the
recent price hike of cigarettes.
