PM to lay foundation stone for second TIFR campus in Hyderabad
Hyderabad, Oct 18 (PTI) Indian Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh would lay the foundation stone for the second campus of
the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) here and
address the inaugural session of the 21st general meeting of
Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Tuesday.
Over 350 scientists from 35 countries are expected to
attend the four-day meet of TWAS at the Hyderabad
International Convention Centre in the south eastern state Of
Andhra Pradesh.
Later, the Prime Minister will lay foundation stone for
the prestigious TIFR campus at Gachibowli here, Andhra Pradesh
Chief Minister K Rosaiah told reporters Monday.
"As part of a national effort, TIFR proposed to extend
in a big way by setting up a new campus. After extensive
search in various locations in the country, TIFR finally
decided to set up its new campus in Hyderabad," he said.
The campus is coming up at a 209-acre site on the
Hyderabad Central University premises at Kanch Gachibowli
village here.
The establishment of the campus is expected to bring in
large number of benefits with a projected investment of over
Rs 2,500 crore over a period of 12-15 years, he said.
Referring to the apprehensions expressed by some faculty
members, students and political parties about the land
allotment made to TIFR by the Central University, Rosaiah said
the apprehensions stemmed from the misunderstanding that the
TIFR is a private institute.
