New Cabinet dubbed the 'Cabinet for realizing peace of mind'
TOKYO, Aug. 2 Kyodo - Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on Friday called his new Cabinet ''the Cabinet for realizing peace of mind,'' saying its mission is ''to carry out political measures.'' At a press conference following the Cabinet reshuffle, the prime minister also suggested he will not dissolve the House of Representatives in the near future, saying, ''The social and economic situation now require us to carry out policies, rather than to discuss the dissolution of the lower house.'' On a possible hike in the consumption tax, he said that while fiscal rehabilitation will not be brought about without an increase in the sales tax, ''It is necessary to fully explain to the public how to deal with the issue.'' On the special antiterrorism law authorizing Japan's refueling mission in the Indian Ocean, which is likely to be a major topic in the upcoming extraordinaryDiet session, Fukuda expressed willingness to continue the operations.
''We cannot ignore the great sacrifices being made by concerned countries forthe activities,'' Fukuda said.
On other diplomatic challenges, Fukuda pledged to actively address various issues such as global warming while promoting international cooperation in the fight against terrorism, peacekeeping operations and providing reconstructionsupport.
Fukuda also vowed to make utmost efforts to promote an active Asia-Pacific policy based on the Japan-U.S. alliance and to seek a solution for the issue ofNorth Korea's nuclear missiles and its past abductions of Japanese nationals.
Fukuda said his new Cabinet faces challenges such as rising oil prices, pensions and employment, while noting that he has steadily worked to realize a low-carbon society and to reform the Defense Ministry and social securitysystems.
''From now on, I will accelerate reforms from the viewpoint of the people bysteadily carrying out each policy under the reshuffled Cabinet,'' Fukuda said.
On the timing of the extraordinary Diet session, Fukuda said he will decideafter talking with the ruling coalition parties in the near future.
