HARUMANIS MANGO PLANTERS TURN TO TURKEY BREEDING FOR EXTRA INCOME

KANGAR (Perlis, Malaysia), Oct 19 (Bernama) -- Harumanis mango planters in Paya
Kelubi here, who have been making a handsome profit each year by selling the
fruit, will have another source of income soon - that is by breeding turkey.

The pioneer project had been introduced to 14 harumanis mango plantation owners
who were given 30 turkey poults each by the Veterinary Services Department,
amounting to RM30,000, to be bred at their respective plantations.
(US$1=RM3.09)

Northern state of Perlis Agriculture, Agro-based and Cooperative Development
Committee chairman Sabry Ahmad said the pioneer project was launched two months
ago and the turkeys were expected to be fit for sale or slaughter within a year.

A mixed breed turkey could reach a weight of between 30 and 40 kilogrammes and
sold at a price of between RM15 and RM25 per kilogramme, he told reporters after
visiting the turkey breeding site, here Monday.

He did not rule out the possibility that the project could be expanded to over
35 other planters, who owned a total of 30ha of harumanis mango plantation in
Paya Kelubi next year if the pioneer project succeeded.
