INDONESIA, M`SIA SHOULD MEET MORE OFTEN TO AVOID STRAINED RELATIONS
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- The actions by certain groups to strain
relations between Malaysia and Indonesia could be avoided if the two countries
held more forums and meetings to discuss matters, said a Golkar leader.
East Java Golkar deputy president, Eddie Budi Prabowo, said such forums and
meetings were now lacking, unlike the time when Indonesia was under President
Suharto.
He said after Suharto's administration came to an end in 1998, forums and
meetings between representatives of both countries which had for long been the
platform for discussing issues were no longer a prime agenda but would only be
convened when there was an arising issue.
"That is why some groups have taken advantage of the situation. Therefore,
Malaysian and Indonesian leaders and officials must meet more often to
strengthen relations and resolve issues."
Eddie Budi said this when met at the International Forum on "The Creation of
Global Citizens: Media Liberation and New Political Realities", at the Putra
World Trade Centre, here, Monday.
Suharto, who ruled Indonesia for 32 years from 1966, died in January 2008 after
being in critical condition at a Jakarta hospital for a month.
Vice-president II of the Singapore National Malays Organisation, Abdul Mutalib
Ithnin, when asked about Malaysia-Indonesia relations, said any conflict between
the two countries which had Muslim-majority population, should be resolved
amicably through discussions.
"We all need to work together and arising issues should not be blown up. We
should look at other matters that are more beneficial for us," he said.
Meanwhile, India's former Union Minister R. Prabhu, who is representing the
ndian National Congress party, said it was important to step up efforts for
people-to-people interaction.
He said the people and governments of both countries should also refrain from
negative acts that could raise tension.
On another note, he said: "Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India,
had once said when our people settled in another country and become citizens of
that country, they should be loyal to that country and the country of origin
came second."
The two-day forum held in conjunction with the Umno General Assembly from
Tuesday until Saturday, are being chaired by Malaysia's former representative to
the United Nations Razali Ismail, former home minister Syed Hamid Albar and
former secretary-general of the ministry Rastam Mohd Isa. It was opened by
Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
The over 400 participants include 63 representing 22 political parties from 20
foreign countries and 54 from Umno clubs overseas.
