MALAYSIAN TECHNOLOGY FOR TEACHERS IN SOUTH SULAWESI
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- In the true sense, Malaysia has
transferred its indigenous technology and thanks to Institut Aminuddin Baki (IAB).
The experts and teachers from IAB did not only cross the waters separating
Malaysia and Indonesia (South China Sea and the Sulawesi Sea), but also ventured
hundreds of mile inland to evaluate the effectiveness of their learning
software.
IAB's Director Abdul Ghafar Mahmud led 19 of his research officers and IAB's
senior lecturers to Makassar, a major city in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, in
their undertaking.
They, then, continued with their terrestrial journey to the rural areas to meet
the teachers and education officers within the Enrekang district who previously
had undergone professional development training at IAB's main campus in Genting
Highlands in , Pahang.
During the five-day working visit sometime middle of this year, IAB's entourage
also gathered information on the need for further training in leadership and
education management in Sulawesi.
The data is useful in working out value added courses in the future. With the
feedback, IAB could also modify existing programmes in line with the current
needs and the wants of the target groups in the future.
"The visit to South Sulawesi also highlights IAB's role at the international
stage in not only bringing innovation and change, but also in making innovation
sustainable and manage efficiently the limited resources in learning and
development," said Ghafar to Bernama.
IAB, an institution that strives to improve schooling experience, especially in
education management and leadership in Malaysia, has succeeded in establishing
the IAB-Enrekang Alumni.
The alumni was established as a platform to further enhance the bilateral
relations between IAB and the teachers of Enrekang.
Apart from this, the use of e-Learning portal, a virtual learning world invented
by IAB, has been extended to the Enrekang Alumni to facilitate guidance and
reference by expert lecturers and IAB mentors.
In future, when the e-Learning portal is installed in all schools in South
Sulawesi, thus, all the alumni members who consist of school headmasters who had
underwent training at IAB, will be given access to utilise this virtual
learningtool.
According to Ghafar, IAB expertise in leadership and education management were
also introduced to the teachers during the seminar entitled `To Get Qualified
Educational Quality through Education Professionalism' organisedby both the
Enrekang Education Department and IAB.
The participants were exposed to knowledge sharing and experience through a
working paper that revolved around the present education world and the learning
technology, including; "School Improvement Programme" (SIP); "Kompas On-Line" &
"e-Learning"; "Programme Organisational Development" (PrOD); and "Quali ty
Assurance".
In a nutshell, all discussions on innovation models that emphasise on
technology transfer are geared towards organising human resource through
integrated and advanced system.
Though IAB has earned a reputation as an expert institute that trains future
school heads in leading and managing schools, there are many things that we have
to re-learn and there are some things that we have to learn further, according
to Ghafar, who was impressed with the “Honest Canteen” concept implemented there
after visiting five schools - elementary, middle and high school.
"For example, the honest canteen, at the Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri 1,
Enrekang operated by the Intra School Students Organisation (OSIS). The buying
and selling does not involve cashier. The exact change is handed over and when
there is balance it is left in the kitty. The transaction is based on trust."
Ghafar opined that the idea could be incorporated in the school curriculum back home to inculcate the values of honesty and integrity among school children.
Apart from this, during a visit to the interior, Ghafar and IAB's
researchers also found that schools in South Sulawesi are very much in need of English syllabus, especially from standard 1 – 6.
To this, the knowledge competency standard in Malaysian schools has been proposed to the South Sulawesi education authorities. The proposal package alsoincludes Expert Teachers and Headmasters exchange between Enrekang and the Education Ministry.
The matter must be looked into thoroughly by those in the know, like the ministry's Curriculum Development Division, before any decision can be taken.
Ghafar said, in principle, IAB is ready to create any learning and teaching stimulus according to the 'Best Practices’.
"What is important is to ensure the target group including the school children, teachers, and education administrators, are confident and find it easy to carry out the task throughout their lives".
