MALAYSIA TO STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIP WITH BRUNEI, LIBYA AND SUDAN IN HIGHER EDUCATION

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Wednesday signed a memorandum of
understanding (MoU) with Brunei, Sudan and Libya to strengthen bilateral
relationship in higher education.

Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who signed the MoU, said it was
aimed at seeking increased collaboration in consultancy, staff development and
facilities training in a university-to-university exchange.

"One of them is on ways to step up student mobility. It is not a student
exchange programme but rather a programme where a student needs to study at
least, for one semester in a foreign university.

"For example, a Brunei student at a university in Malaysia or a Malaysian
student at a university in Brunei...it also means that we have to look into the
issue of similar credit transfer programme, quality and the like," he said.

The minister was speaking at a press conference after the MoU signing ceremony
in conjunction with the Fifth Islamic Conference of Ministers of Higher
Education and Scientific Research at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here.

Mohamed Khaled hoped the MoU would propose more exchanges of information and
visits related to various fields such as curriculum development, including
exchange of curriculum materials, especially at university-to-university level.

The other signatories of the MoU were Brunei Education Minister Pehin Abu Bakar
Apong, Libya's Secretary of the General People's Committee for Education and
Scientific Research Dr Abdul Kabir al-Fakri and Sudan's Minister of Higher
Education and Scientific Research Dr Peter Adok Niyabe.
