CALL TO END ISRAELI OCCUPATION OF GOLAN HEIGHTS

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- Syria strongly condemned Israel's continuous occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights and called for an end to the illegal occupation.

Syria's Minister of Higher Education Dr Ghiath Barakat said Israel had defied
the resolutions by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council and
calls by the international community for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli
forces from the area on June 4, 1967.

Syria also urged the international community to help it put an end to Israel's
illegal practices which prevent people in the occupied Golan Heights from
pursuing their studies in Syrian universities.

"This has adverse implications on the educational state of Syrian Arab people in
the occupied land," he said on the sidelines of the Fifth Islamic Conference of
Ministers of Higher Education and Scientific Research, here, Wednesday.

His comments were made following the resolution made by Syria on supporting
students in the occupied Golan Heights and denouncing Israel's occupation of the
area, at the conference.

However, the resolution was not agreed to be inserted into the Kuala Lumpur
Declaration of the Fifth Islamic Conference of Ministers of Higher Education and
Scientific Research 2010.

Barakat said the resolution proposed by Syria was in line with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) Charter of which the objectives included contributing to world peace and security through various means, particularly through education, science and culture.

He said it was also in accordance with the OIC Charter which called for respect for basic human rights.
