GOVERNMENT URGED TO MAKE REDUCTION OF ILLICIT CIGARETTES A PRIORITY
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- The Confederation of Malaysian Tobacco Manufacturers (CMTM) has urged the government to make reduction of the illicit cigarettes trade a priority.
Its chief executive, Shaik Abbas Ibrahim, said an immediate action that could be embarked upon was to re-invest the funds collected from excise and put in more resources and manpower to increase enforcement efforts, both to curb supply and demand of illicit cigarettes.
In a statement Wednesday, he noted that the great demand for illicit cigarettes spurred the growth in supply because it was sold cheap at about RM3 (US$0.96) per pack of 20 cigarettes.
He said a study by the Global Tobacco Report (dated June 2010) from Goldman Sachs recorded Malaysia as having the highest level of illicit cigarette trade incidence in the world last year.
