MALAYSIA HOPE FOR SPEEDY INDONESIAN ACTION ON HAZE

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia hopes Indonesia wil act fast to curb the haze that is shrouding Johore before it gets worse, assuming that it originated from the neighbouring country.

However, Foreign Mnister Anifah Aman hastened to add that the haze was "not anything that was deliberately caused" and Malaysia had no intention of submitting a note of protest to Indonesia.

Also, forest fires are occuring in other countries as well and not just Indonesia, he told reporters here.

And even if Indonesia was the source of the haze in Johor,"we cannot accuse Indonesia of not taking action," he said, commenting on reports that the haze was becoming worse and had spread to Singapore.

Anifah said that Malaysia will cooperate with Indonesia and help if neccessary to clear the haze.

A total of 80,282 pupils were directed to stay home as 170 schools were closed Thursday when the air pollutant index showed the haze reaching a dangerous level.
