MORE TOURISTS COMING TO M'SIA DUE TO MY PROMOTION STRATEGIES

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen has denied
allegations her ministry had overspent on promotion overseas, pointing out that
her promotion strategies had successfully attracted more tourist arrivals to the
country.

She said she had lent a more personal touch to her tourism promotion methods by
visiting the various countries to explain about Malaysia and attract more
tourists.

"I decided that I am going to go down myself more often. I will speak to tour
operators, the media and the authorities to convince them that Malaysia is a
good country to visit.

"Therefore, the strategy varies, and if the impact of a minister's visit is much
more than just a general promotion, the minister should go down. That means you
know your job," she told reporters at the Parliament Lobby here Thursday.

She was commenting on opposition Member of Parliament Tian Chua's allegation
that her ministry had spent more to travel but less to promote the country
abroad.

On Wednesday, Dr Ng, in a written answer to Tian Chua's question, said the
ministry was expected to spend RM1.7 million for her official trips abroad this
year, as compared to the cost of the tourism minister's visit of RM1.2 million
in 2008 and RM1.6 million last year. (US$1=RM3.10)

Clarifying further on Thursday, she said that last year, her ministry had RM337 million for promotion budget, and tourist arrivals rose to 23.65 million, with total amount spent amounting to RM53.4 billion.
Compared to a year before, the promotion budget for her ministry --which was at that time under her predecessor, Azalina Othman -- was RM358 million and tourist arrivals for the year was 22 million, with a total of RM49.56 billion spent in the country.

"Last year, for every tourist that came in, the promotion money we spent was RM14, and the spending of every tourist was RM2,600. In 2008, we spent RM16 per tourist. In 2007, we spent RM18 and in 2006, we spent RM20 (for each tourist)," she said.

Earlier, in a separate function in the capital, Dr Ng said the ministry had allocated RM5 million for collaboration with the media to promote the '1Malaysia Green, 1Malaysia Clean Campaign'.

"The objective of the campaign is aimed at changing the mindset, habit and attitude of Malaysians towards cleanliness," she added. (US$1=RM3.10)
